Dundee - Historical town with Excellent Shops
Dundee is the 4th largest city in Scotland and is situated on the River Tay. Dundee grew up from a small port in the 11th & 12th centuries and continued to grow during the 15th century when it exported mainly wool, flax and jute until it became a whaling port between 1750 and 1914.
No doubt helped by its reputation of being the sunniest city in the UK, Dundee has recently transformed itself into a dynamic, modern city and become a centre for arts and culture, life sciences, and the creative industries as its heavy engineering and manufacturing activities have declined.
Dundee is well served by an excellent town centre with numerous shops along its High Street and surrounding streets. The Overgate Mall is home to some of the most famous fashion brands in the world and is the only single sided shopping mall in Europe. A spectacular two storey curved glass wall wraps itself around the City Churches in the heart of Dundee. It seems to capture light from all directions, all of which helps make it a very nice place to shop.
Dundee is also home to Captain Scott's ship RRS Discovery and the Verdant Works; a working museum of the jute trade. The Dundee Observatory is another well known visitor attraction situated in Balgay Park. No text about Dundee would be complete without mention of The Dandy. Published in Dundee for almost 70 years, The Dandy has become an institution in the comic world with characters like Desperate Dan whose bronze statue can be seen in the city centre.
